Photometric Properties of Kiso Ultraviolet-Excess Galaxies in the Lynx-Ursa Major Region

چکیده
We have performed a systematic study of several regions in the sky where the number of galaxies exhibiting star formation (SF) activity is greater than average. We used Kiso ultraviolet-excess galaxies (KUGs) as our SF-enhanced sample. By statistically comparing the KUG and non-KUG distributions, we discovered four KUG-rich regions with a size of ∼ 10×10. One of these regions corresponds spatially to a filament of length ∼ 60 h Mpc in the Lynx-Ursa Major region (α ∼ 9 − 10 , δ ∼ 42 − 48). We call this “the Lynx-Ursa Major (LUM) filament”. We obtained V (RI)C surface photometry of 11 of the KUGs in the LUM filament and used these to investigate the integrated colors, distribution of SF regions, morphologies, and local environments. We found that these KUGs consist of distorted spiral galaxies and compact galaxies with blue colors. Their star formation occurs in the entire disk, and is not confined to just the central regions. The colors of the SF regions imply that active star formation in the spiral galaxies occurred 10 yr ago, while that of the compact objects occurred 10 yr ago. Though the photometric characteristics of these KUGs are similar to those of interacting galaxies or mergers, most of these KUGs do not show direct evidence of merger processes. A Determination of the Luminosity Function of DA White Dwarfs from the Kiso Survey
We rederive the luminosity function for the sample of DA white dwarfs from the Kiso Schmidt ultraviolet excess survey (KUV stars) using the spectroscopic method where the atmospheric parameters (Teff and log g) and absolute visual magnitudes for each star are obtained from detailed model atmosphere fits to optical spectroscopic data. We compare the result of our determination with that obtained...
متن کاملThe evolution of the photometric properties of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies
Aims. We investigate the present-day photometric properties of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group. From the analysis of their integrated colours, we consider a possible link between dwarf spheroidals and giant ellipticals. From the analysis of the MV vs (B-V) plot, we search for a possible evolutionary link between dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and dwarf irregular galaxies (dI...
متن کاملSurface Photometric Calibration of the Infrared Tully-Fisher Relation Using Cepheid-based Distances of Galaxies
Infrared J and H surface photometry are carried out for nearby 12 galaxies whose distances have been accurately measured via HST Cepheid observations. Using the total, isophotal, and surface-photometric aperture magnitudes we calibrate the infrared luminosity-line width relation (IRTF). It is found that IRTF changes its slope at log W c 20 ∼ 2.45 in all the examined magnitude systems. The appar...
متن کاملAnalysis of a Proper-Motion Selected Sample of Stars in the Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We have studied the stellar population and internal structure of the core of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, using a sample of stars selected to be members based on their proper motions. In agreement with previous studies, we find Ursa Minor to be dominated by an old, metal-poor stellar population. A small number of stars with high membership probabilities lie redward of the red giant b...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
